Serial bomb blasts in Jaipur 60 killed and 200 injured.

Jaipur, 13th May, 2008:  After lull in militant activities, there is a sudden spurt of their activity in the country.  Even as the BSF and armed forces are successfully dealing with the border incursions in the Jammu Sector; the militants struck in Jaipur setting off bombs in six densely populated places in the capital of Rajasthan state. 

The eight serial blasts which claimed at least 50 lives went off within in 15 minutes of each other, in crowded market centers in the old city where thousands of people gather in the evenings.  About 200 were injured in the blasts and were moved to the Sawai Man Singh Hospital. 

The blasts occurred at 7.35 pm this evening at Manik Chowk, Tripolia Bazaar, Johri Bazaar, Lakshmi Misthan Bandar, Badi Chowpat and Choti Chowpat, there was chaos all around as people ran helter skelter in panic. One live bomb was recovered from Chandpole area.. Local phone networks were jammed around blast sites

Central Paramilitary Forces stationed across Rajasthan were put on alert and RAF deployment increased is increased.. Delhi, Mumbai and other metros were put on high alert immediately. Harayana and UP and other neighboring states were put on alert. The details are very sketchy except that the first blast took place in a car and another in a shop. Cycles and alarm clocks were also used in the blasts.  Mr. A.S. Gill the DGP of Rajasthan said that it was obviously a terror attack of sleeper cells in Jaipur

The President Smt. Pratiba Patil and Vice-President Ansari, the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and the Home Minister Mr. Shivraj Patil condemned the attack. Minister of State for Home Mr. Jaiswal said that it was a well planned and orchestrated terror attack. According to Mr. Jaiswal a team from the Home Ministry left for Rajasthan to assess the situation.. He also called for a review of the security in the states.

Mrs. Sonia Gandhi the Chairperson of UPA and the President of the Congress Party condemning the attack said that it was a crime perpetuated on humanity.  Mr. L.K. Advani the leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha condemned the attack.

The Chief Minister Mrs. Vijaya Raje Scindia condemning the attack said that it was an attack on the Nation and expects the Central Government and the people would rise as one to tackle this ghastly attack.   Mr. Rajnath Singh the President of the BJP condemned the attack and expressed his grief..

Its deplorable says Sachin Pilot a Congress MP from Rajasthan.  He appealed for calm and asked people not to panic.  Ashok Gehlot ex- Congress Chief Minister of Rajasthan also condemned the attack.

The terrorist attack created ripples even in USA with the authorities there condemning the attack and emphasizing that terror should be contained in the sub-continent at any cost.

Meanwhile Mr. Lalit Modi of the IPL said that there was no threat to the IPL Twenty20 cricket matches yet to be played in Jaipur.
